Em at the near top of our 2,000 ft climb
Hey all! We have had yet another massive day today. We decided to begin the adventure with yet another 2,000 ft climb, this time up Ben Lomond Mountain out of Boulder Creek. We hit troubles early, with Lauren being nudged by a car on the ascension. She is a little bruised but otherwise OK! Em was also experiencing some mechanical issues, with her gears deciding to pack up half-way up the mountain. Despite this, the team battled on and made it into Davenport at the Swanton Berry Farm.

The Berry Farm is a bit of a wonder unto itself, with incredible pies and soups and other delicious goods. But we were there specifically to meet with media and ride to the Ghost Bike site of Joshua Raine Laven, a cyclist killed in a hit-and-run accident on Highway 1 in May. The visit to the memorial site was very moving, and struck a definite chord with all members of the group. Josh, like us, was an adventurer, and was hit doing our route in reverse.

Here we met with Joan, the woman who found Josh’s body by the roadside, and adopted his dog, Ozzie, who had been traveling in the bicycle with Josh since Florida. She and her husband (and Ozzie) have been kind enough to share their home with us tonight, which is where we are currently writing to you from.

Tomorrow we are going to have a play date with Santa Cruz! It’ll be nice to have a break from the bikes and let everybody’s bruises heal.
